Research on Fundraising and Philanthropy in Australia

Managing for Recovery Report 2009

 

Fundraising Institute Australia, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and the Centre for Social Impact have again collaborated in the development, issue and analysis of a comprehensive survey on the impact of economic conditions on the nonprofit sector. The survey, which was conducted in December 2009, was launched at the FIA’s International Fundraising Conference in Adelaide on 22 February 2010. It follows on from the Managing in Downturn survey undertaken in May 2009.

Managing in a Downturn Report 2009

 

The Fundraising Institute Australia, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and the Centre for Social Impact collaborated in this comprehensive survey, conducted in April and May 2009. The survey draws upon similar research conducted by PwC and the Institute of Fundraising in the UK last year. Questions focus on the impact in the last six months, as well as the anticipated future impact over the next year. In total, 263 NFPs responded.

FIA Research on Key Issues in Fundraising

In 2004, FIA undertook research on key issues impacting on the legislation and regulation of fundraising. The principal research findings focus on five main areas as follows:

  1. Defining fundraising
  2. Community confidence in fundraising
  3. Model for fundraising regulation
  4. Cost of fundraising
  5. Mutual recognition and national harmonisation


FIA’s research demonstrates the changing environment in which fundraising occurs in contemporary society. Conclusions drawn from this research are summarised in FIA’s responses to each of the issues. Click here to access the report.

ATO: Financial Reporting for not-for-profit entities policy paper
This policy paper looks at the importance of, and problems faced in, financial reporting for not-for-profit entities. The paper is relevant to Australian standard setters and the community in developing standards not only for businesses and governments but also for the not-for-profit sector. This policy paper aims to promote further research and discussion.
 

Giving Australia: Research on Philanthropy in Australia

The ‘Giving Australia’ project is an initiative of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership, coordinated by the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) in collaboration with the Centre for Australian Community Organisations and Management (CACOM) at the University of Technology, Sydney, the Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies (CPNS) at the Queensland University of Technology, Roy Morgan Research (RMR), McNair Ingenuity Research and the Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA).

Philanthropy Australia

Philanthropy Australia promotes giving and represents those that give to the community. They offer  representation, networking, services and information to members and others in the non-profit sector. Their website includes fact sheets and research reports on Philanthropy in Australia.

 

AMP NATSEM Reports

Over the past two years, AMP and the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) in Canberra have produced a series of reports that open windows on Australian society, the way we live and work – and our financial and personal aspirations.

The reports focus on the distribution of income and wealth as key factors that differentiate generations and segments of society. AMP sponsors this research to help our customers make informed financial and lifestyle choices.

 

UTS Centre of Australian Community Organisations and Management (CACOM)

CACOM has published over sixty working papers reporting research undertaken by CACOM members and other community sector researchers on various aspects of community sector, volunteering and philanthropy in the Asia Pacific Region.

 

QUT Centre of Philanthropy and Non-Profit Studies (CPNS)

The Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies consists of academics and research students who have an interest in researching philanthropy and nonprofit organisations. The Centre is located within the School of Accountancy in the Faculty of Business at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. The website contains downloadable reports on variuos issues concerning philanthopy and giving in Australia.

 

Givewell

Givewell specialise in gathering information about charities, foundations and community attitudes to giving. Their website includes information and research reports on giving in Australia, including an online directory of Trusts and Foundations.
