The Hon Bill Shorten MP made "no apology for getting on with the job of reform" for our sector in his speech at the Australian Charity Law Association Annual Conference in Melbourne on Friday, September 23.

In his address, Mr Shorten discussed several major issues including:

  • The Australian Charities and NFP Commission
  • Introduction of a statutory definition of "charity".
  • Better targeting of tax concessions.
  • "In Australia" test.
  • Regulatory framework for public ancillary funds.

"Given the decades of inaction on this front, I make no apology for getting on with the job of reform," Mr Shorten said.

"Changes are needed across all levels of government and we need momentum to ensure that real reform doesn't languish for anothe decade."
