A definition of charity – call for comment
31 October 2011
The Federal Government has just released a Consultation Paper on A Definition of Charity, with a closing date of Friday 9 December 2011.The consultation paper is the latest step in the Federal Government’s reform agenda for the NFP sector which includes introducing a statutory definition of “charity” applicable across all Commonwealth laws from 1 July 2013.
Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten said the current definition of charity is based on more than 400 years of common law, and “its meaning can often be confusing and unclear”.
The FIA is preparing a submission and urges members to provide input. Please forward all comments to gknox@fia.org.au by 15 November with the subject “A Definition of Charity”.
