Parliament passes Australian Charities and NFP legislation
1 November 2012
The legislation to establish the Australian Charities and NFP Commission (ACNC) was passed by the House of Representatives today, Thursday 1 November 2012.
This was the final Parliamentary vote confirming the amendments made in the Senate earlier in the week highlighting the Commission's red tape reducing role and other matters.
Before it becomes law it is necessary for the legislation to receive Royal Assent, but that is usually a formality.
Although Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury, who is the reponsible Minister, said earlier that the ACNC would open for business on 10 December, he was not as specific in a more recent statement.
The start date for the ACNC would be announced 'in the coming weeks', he said yesterday.
We will continue to keep members up to date with developments as they arise.
